New Demerara River Bridge in Guyana Opens to Traffic

The New Demerara River Bridge in Guyana, constructed by China Railway Construction Corporation (International) Limited (CRCCI), was officially opened to traffic on October 5 local time.

Located in the capital city of Georgetown, the bridge stretches approximately 2,900 meters with a main span of 300 meters. It’s a dual-tower, double-cable-plane prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridge that features four lanes in both directions and supports a designed speed of 80 km/h. The 300-meter main span overcame a series of challenges posed by complex local geological and environmental conditions.

Engineers applied a range of advanced technologies, including reverse circulation drilling for ultra-long pile foundations, intelligent temperature control for massive pile caps, BIM modeling, and precision hydraulic adjustment systems. These innovations ensured the high-quality completion of ultra-deep foundations and the precise closure of the main girder, establishing a refined quality management system throughout the entire lifecycle and setting a new benchmark for large-scale bridge construction in the country.

Upon opening, the bridge is expected to reduce cross-river travel time by 75 percent, double the river’s navigational capacity, and will serve as a key transport hub connecting the Atlantic Ocean with Guyana’s inland regions.
