The recent inclusion of Beijing’s Central Axis on the UNESCO World Heritage List gives the international community a glimpse of the nature of both ancient and modern Chinese layout and architectural design. Symmetry, a profound aesthetic inspiration derived from nature, is also a principle pursued by China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC) engineers in their design and construction work.
Constructed by CCCC First Highway Engineering Co., Ltd, the Qingshuipu Bridge in Ningbo city, Zhejiang province, spans 908 meters, with a main span of 468m. This cable-stayed bridge, which features four inclined towers, is a crucial part of Ningbo’s ring expressway. Once completed, it will connect the northern and southern banks of the Yongjiang River, playing a vital role in improving Zhejiang’s transport network and Ningbo’s urban development. The project has been awarded the National Quality Engineering Award.
The Xizang Exhibition and Convention Center, co-constructed by First Highway Engineering Co., Ltd, is the first comprehensive international convention center in the Xizang autonomous region and a landmark building in Lhasa. The two venues cover approximately 30,000 square meters. The project has significantly enhanced Lhasa’s urban infrastructure and allowed Xizang to promote itself to the outside world.
The Yuhe River Bridge, built by First Highway Engineering Co., Ltd, is the seventh bridge to cross the Yuhe River in Datong city, Shanxi province. The main tower of the bridge is designed in a double-legged “human” shape. It is a double-cable plane cable-stayed bridge with a complex spatial structure. The bridge spans approximately 2.7 kilometers, with a total height of 107.8 meters. The main tower’s legs converge at a height of 65.6 meters, supported by 64 sets of fan-shaped space cable stays. It is the tallest and most challenging bridge in Datong and the city’s first butterfly-shaped interchange bridge. This project also received the National Quality Engineering Award.
Constructed by CCCC’s Second Navigation Engineering Co., Ltd, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge is a key infrastructure project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The bridge spans 2,826 meters, with a main span of 1,666m. The two main towers stand at 270 meters high, with a navigational clearance height of 76.5m above sea level. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge has set five world records, including the largest offshore steel box girder span, highest navigational clearance, and largest offshore anchor foundation. It was awarded the George Richardson Award at the International Bridge Conference.
The Fenghuang Yellow River Bridge in Jinan, constructed by Second Navigation Engineering Co., Ltd, is the Yellow River’s widest bridge and the world’s largest and widest three-tower self-anchored suspension bridge. The bridge utilized a total of 114,000 tons of steel. Officially opened in 2022, the bridge serves both as a main urban road and supports urban rail transit. The project won the China Steel Structure Gold Award.
The Qingshuitang Bridge in Zhuzhou, Hunan province, co-constructed by CCCC’s Third Navigation Engineering Co., Ltd, features a 608-meter-long main span and a 408-meter-long double-deck steel truss arch bridge. It is a representative project among the 21 approved urban old industrial area relocation and renovation projects, ranking sixth in the world and third in China among similar bridges. The bridge is a key artery connecting the Shifeng and Tianyuan districts in Zhuzhou, enhancing the city’s capacity. The project’s complex bridge construction techniques earned it the Gold Steel Award special prize in Shanghai.
The Shuangbao Grand Bridge on the Chongqing-Changsha Expressway, constructed by CCCC’s Second Highway Engineering Co., Ltd., is the world’s largest double-span continuous arch bridge under construction, with a total length of 1,620 meters. The main bridge adopts a 2×405-meter double-span continuous concrete-filled steel tubular truss arch. Once completed, the bridge will further improve Chongqing’s expressway network, significantly enhancing the traffic capacity of the southeastern Chongqing corridor, supporting the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, and accelerating the development of an international comprehensive transportation hub.
The East Gate renovation project at the Hangu Pass Scenic Area, undertaken by CCCC’s Shanghai Dredging Co., Ltd, is located in the historical and cultural tourist area of Lingbao city, Henan province. The project, covering an area of approximately 60,000 square meters, includes river management, water conservancy facilities and landscape roads. Upon completion, the project will integrate the historical and cultural zone of Hangu Pass with the ecological corridor along the Yellow River, connecting the cultural elements of the river and enhancing urban quality of life, creating a new city landmark in the process.
The Chongqing Chaotianmen Yangtze River Bridge, constructed by CCCC’s General Contracting Company, spans 1,741 meters. It features a double-deck bridge structure, with six traffic lanes on the upper deck and rail transit lines flanked by two lanes on the lower deck. This project was the first large-scale infrastructure project built by CCCC using the BT (Build-Transfer) model. The bridge has greatly improved traffic conditions in downtown Chongqing, enhanced the road network and solidified Chongqing’s status as a major city in Southwest China.
The Urban Lounge, constructed by CCCC’s Urban Investment Holding Company, is the first indoor “pillar-free” large-span steel-wood structure exhibition hall in Zhejiang province, covering an area of approximately 5,000 square meters. The building’s design, inspired by the wings of a soaring bird, symbolizes the rapid development of the Longwan district. The project has won several awards, including gold at the World Design Award and the Chinese Wooden Structure Quality Engineering Award.
