[SOES’ 25 YEARS WITH MACAO] Macao Bridge Officially Opens to Traffic

On October 1, marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to China, the Macao Bridge (formerly known as the fourth Macao-Taipa Bridge), constructed by China Railway Hi-Tech Industry Co., Ltd (CRHIC), a subsidiary of China Railway Group Limited, officially opened to traffic.

The Macao Bridge, the fourth sea-crossing link between the Macao Peninsula and Macao’s Taipa, connects three key transportation hubs—sea, land, and air—and is Macao’s first dual-direction, eight-lane sea bridge.

The bridge is a crucial part of Macao’s urban transport system. Its main line stretches 3.085 kilometers, including a sea-crossing section of 2.86 kilometers; and the main span is 1,370 meters long, with two navigable span bridges and a main span of 280 meters.

Built using high-performance Q420 steel, the bridge is designed to be lightweight, efficient, and durable, with a lifespan of 100 years.

The CRHIC was responsible for manufacturing the steel structures for the southern main bridge, southern approach bridge, and Area A interchange.

As a key axis of Macao’s rapid transit system with a double ring and axis, the Macao Bridge serves as an essential route connecting the artificial island of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge with the New Urban Zone Area A, and the route between the Macao Peninsula and Taipa. It also serves as the main transit route for the residents of New Urban Zone Area A.

The new bridge is set to play a pivotal role in improving Macao’s transportation network, making travel more convenient for residents, and fostering greater regional connectivity and development.
