China Merchants Delivers World’s Largest and Eco-Friendly Car Carrier

The Höegh Aurora, the world’s largest and environmentally-friendly pure car and truck carrier, has departed from the Jiangsu shipyard on China’s east coast.

The vessel, built by China Merchants Heavy Industry, has a carrying capacity of 9,100 cars and its launch marks a new beginning for the green and intelligent development of the world shipping industry.

As the first of the groundbreaking Aurora Class vessels to receive dual-fuel and zero-carbon-ready goals, the Höegh Aurora measures 199.9 meters in length, 37.6 meters in width and 14.53 meters in depth.

It features five movable decks and 13 movable ramps, allowing for flexible loading across 14 decks. The top deck is equipped with 1,500 square meters of solar panels, which can generate up to 35 percent of the electricity needed for engine operation.

The vessel is equipped with a low-speed dual-fuel main engine and three dual-fuel generators, allowing it to alternate between liquefied natural gas (LNG) and conventional fuel.

It has also received DNV’s ammonia-ready and methanol-ready notations, making it the first car carrier designed to use carbon-neutral fuels, aligning with the technical requirements for achieving dual carbon goals.
