Erection of the Southern Approach of Malaysia’s Lupar Cross-Sea Bridge Completes

Erection of the southern approach of Malaysia’s Lupar cross-sea bridge, undertaken by China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (MBEC), a subsidiary of China Railway Group Limited, has been fully completed.

The Lupar cross-sea bridge is the largest individual bridge project in Malaysia and a key engineering project for the coastal highway in Sarawak.

With a total length of 5,050 meters, the bridge is designed in 85 box girder segments totaling 1,101 pieces, each with a standard span of 50 meters. These were all erected using the TJ1600 girder erection machine in a segmental method.

Since the erection of the first box girder in April 2023, the project team from MBEC has overcome numerous challenges. They applied technologies such as high-altitude no-support system transitions, ultra-long external prestress grouting systems, and waterborne girder erection in complex sea conditions, laying a solid foundation for the completion of the bridge.

Upon completion, the bridge will connect with the existing Pan Borneo Highway, ending the reliance on ferries for travel between the two sides. It will significantly improve local transportation infrastructure, promoting regional integration and economic development.
