CRRC Unveils New Meter-Gauge EMU in Malaysia

The newly developed Malaysia ETS3 meter-gauge Electric Multiple Unit (EMU), crafted by CRRC Corporation Limited (CRRC), was recently unveiled at CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd.

This state-of-the-art meter-gauge EMU, developed independently by China and tailored specifically for Malaysia, will operate along the country’s west coastline, spanning approximately 950 kilometers from Padang Besar in Perlis at the northern border to Johor Bahru in Johor at the southern border, with a top speed of 160 km/h. The train is set to significantly enhance the passenger capacity and operational efficiency of Malaysia’s rail transport network, propelling the country’s modernization.

The train features a six-car formation with 312 seats and a minimum turning radius of 100 meters. Compared to its predecessor, it boasts more powerful traction, larger battery capacity, and a starting tractive effort of 284 kilonewtons, an increase of 24.5 percent. Its starting acceleration is 0.8 meters per square second, up by 14.2 percent, making it well-suited for rapid start-stop operations. The auxiliary system’s battery capacity is 640 ampere-hours, double that of the previous generation, allowing the train to maintain ventilation and emergency equipment operation for up to two hours in emergencies.

For the first time, the train is equipped with an intelligent driver assistance system that analyzes the route environment to provide more economical driving strategies. Additionally, a remote wireless transmission system enables real-time monitoring of the train’s status. The application of intelligent maintenance technology allows for real-time monitoring, early warning, remote diagnosis, and handling of critical components, reducing single maintenance duration from 4.7 days to 1.2 days, making overall maintenance more convenient and cost-effective.

The train employs high-speed disc brake meter-gauge bogies and a dual-pipe dual-system redundant braking system, ensuring both high-speed stability and enhanced braking reliability, allowing the train to run steadily and stop reliably. The train’s sleek, diamond-cut exterior design is inspired by the Permaisuri Zarith Sofiah Opera House in Malaysia, while the red interior decor of the passenger compartments and seats draws from Malaysia’s national flower, the hibiscus, exuding beauty, grandeur, and vibrant enthusiasm. The business class is equipped with fully enclosed luggage compartments, an on-demand entertainment system, wireless internet, quick meal ordering, and online payment options, ensuring a more comfortable and convenient travel experience for passengers.

The rollout of the Malaysia ETS3 meter-gauge EMU marks another significant milestone in the collaboration between China and Malaysia. Subsequent units will be locally manufactured at the ASEAN Manufacturing Center in Malaysia. The CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd. has been serving Malaysia’s rail transport sector for 15 years, providing various types of vehicles, including intercity EMUs, mainline EMUs, hybrid EMUs, and light rail trains. The establishment of CRRC Kuala Lumpur Maintenance Sdn. Bhd. and the CRRC Rolling Stock Center in Malaysia have achieved localization in manufacturing, procurement, employment, marketing, and maintenance.
