China’s First 2,000-Ton-Class Intelligent Research Vessel Launched

The fifth-generation comprehensive research vessel Tongji, the first in China to obtain intelligent symbols for remote control and autonomous navigation in open waters, has been launched.

Designed and built by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, Tongji is a 2,000-ton-class eco-friendly and intelligent research vessel.

It has a total length of 81.5 meters, a width of 15 meters and a depth of 6.9 meters, with a designed displacement of approximately 2,500 tons.

The vessel features a range of 8,000 nautical miles, a maximum speed of 15 knots, and a domestically developed full-rotating electric propulsion system.

Upon delivery in May, the vessel will be used for scientific exploration voyages by Tongji University’s marine discipline and other units, as well as students’ maritime internships, providing solid support for scientific marine research and the cultivation of marine-related professionals.

The vessel is equipped with cutting-edge intelligent systems and incorporates breakthroughs in overall performance research and multiple key technologies.

Its noise and vibration control meet advanced industry standards, making it one of China’s most innovative research vessels.

Designed for unrestricted navigation (except in ice-covered areas), Tongji is capable of all-weather operations and can carry remotely operated underwater vehicles, multiple containerized onboard laboratories and various unmanned systems.

It also features integrated mobile and fixed observation network capabilities, enabling comprehensive oceanographic research.

The vessel is designed to support marine geology and geophysics research, including seafloor topography, sediment analysis and tectonic studies.

It is also equipped to conduct fault detection, maintenance and wind power engineering investigations, making it a versatile platform for both scientific and engineering applications.
