Fourth LNG Carrier for QatarEnergy’s Fleet Expansion Project Named in Shanghai

The naming ceremony for the fourth LNG carrier for QatarEnergy’s LNG fleet expansion project, the Limail, was held on January 15 at Changxing Island in Shanghai.

Officials and representatives from QatarEnergy, COSCO SHIPPING Energy Transportation Co., Ltd., Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd., and other organizations attended the ceremony.

Since QatarEnergy initiated the global tender for its “Hundred Ships Program”, Shanghai LNG, a subsidiary of COSCO SHIPPING Energy Transportation Co., Ltd., and MOL have jointly secured contracts for the construction of seven 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carriers and six 271,000-cubic-meter QC-Max LNG carriers, all of which are being built at Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard.

The first three vessels completed under the program have already entered service, collectively completing six voyages and transporting a total of 369,000 tons of LNG.

The Limail is a fifth-generation 174,000-cubic-meter LNG carrier from Hudong-Zhonghua’s independently developed “Changheng Series”. Designed specially to meet QatarEnergy’s stringent technical standards for operating the world’s largest LNG fleet, the vessel embodies the latest advancements in ship design, state-of-the-art technology, superior environmental performance, and the accumulated expertise of Hudong-Zhonghua’s LNG shipbuilding heritage.

With an overall length of 299 meters, a width of 46.4 meters and a depth of 26.25 meters, the vessel is equipped with a number of low-carbon and digital technologies and equipment, and is classified by the American Bureau of Shipping and the China Classification Society.
