China Oil & Gas Pipeline Network Corporation (PipeChina) ensured a steady supply of clean energy to the 9th Asian Winter Games in Harbin, which ended on February 14.
Strengthening energy security with dual-supply pipelines
To guarantee stable gas supply, PipeChina implemented a dual-supply model via the Mingshui–Harbin and Daqing–Harbin pipelines, delivering over 700,000 cubic meters of natural gas daily.
Ahead of the Games, after a heavy snowstorm on January 21, PipeChina leveraged advanced surveillance technologies, including fiber-optic security alerts, AI-powered video recognition, drone inspections and intelligent cathodic protection to ensure pipeline safety.
Smart operations with AI and big data
PipeChina is accelerating its transition to intelligent pipeline management by integrating AR, AI and big data. In Northeast China, the company has deployed AR smart glasses and intelligent command platforms, allowing engineers to conduct immersive remote inspections, respond swiftly to emergencies and provide real-time operational guidance.
The China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline serves as a model for smart pipeline operations. Adopting a fully digitized approach, the pipeline integrates AI-driven solutions for intelligent inspection, automated station operations and real-time network adjustments. Compressor stations along the route feature remote one-click startup and shutdown functions, marking a shift from traditional to intelligent pipeline management.
Overcoming extreme cold to safeguard the Games
During the Games, PipeChina teams worked in freezing conditions to inspect and maintain infrastructure. The company mobilized teams to conduct in-depth risk assessments, repair damaged pipeline markers and monitor geological hazards.
Beyond technical support, PipeChina also engaged local communities along pipeline routes, distributing 2,326 safety materials to raise awareness.
