Hong Kong and Macau Single-plate Vehicle Trips Exceed 10 Million at Zhuhai Port

According to China Central Television, cross-border travel integration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area continues to gather momentum. As of 11:50 on May 25, the total number of entry and exit trips made by Hong Kong and Macau single-plate vehicles via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Zhuhai Highway Port has surpassed 10 million.

Border inspection statistics show that more than 192,000 vehicles and over 228,000 drivers from Hong Kong and Macau have completed official filing procedures for northbound travel schemes. Launched in successive phases in recent years, the Macau and Hong Kong northbound driving policies allow eligible local vehicles to enter and travel within mainland Guangdong without mainland vehicle licences, greatly simplifying cross-border private travel arrangements.

Optimised clearance procedures and maturing supporting mechanisms have steadily boosted cross-border driving willingness among Hong Kong and Macau residents. Self-driving travel has become a mainstream option for cross-border mobility, driving rapid annual growth in port vehicle throughput. The policy framework broadens living and working boundaries for residents in Hong Kong and Macau, supporting frequent cross-border trips for tourism, family visits, consumption, entrepreneurship and property investment.

Since the official rollout of the two northbound driving initiatives, passenger flow at the border port has maintained robust expansion. The annual growth rate of cross-border passenger trips via the bridge stands at 34 per cent, with nearly 18 million passenger movements recorded throughout 2025. Border inspection authorities project that the total number of cross-border passenger trips will exceed 20 million in 2026.

The sustained surge in cross-border vehicle and passenger flow reflects deepening regional connectivity and integrated development across the Greater Bay Area. Continuous upgrades to port clearance efficiency and supporting infrastructure further reduce cross-border travel costs and improve travel experience for residents from Hong Kong and Macau.

Ongoing policy optimisation and service upgrades will further unlock regional mobility potential. The growing scale of cross-border self-driving travel will continuously reinforce the interconnected development of industries, consumption and livelihoods across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
