China’s First Special Railway Line for Stone Cargo Opens in Macheng
China News Service reports that China’s first dedicated railway freight line for the stone industry officially opened for full operation on May 30 in Macheng, Hubei province, a region widely recognised as China’s renowned granite hub. Constructed by China Railway Shanghai Engineering Bureau, the new infrastructure eliminates long-standing logistics bottlenecks for local stone exports and delivers robust momentum for industrial upgrading, green transformation and high-quality regional economic development.
The specialised freight line represents a landmark infrastructure project tailored for Macheng’s pillar stone industry. It involves a total investment of over 1 billion yuan, stretches 11.37 kilometres and comprises three railway stations. Operational forecasts indicate an annual cargo throughput of 4 million tonnes in the initial phase, with a long-term designed capacity rising to 10 million tonnes. The line enables seamless connectivity between local mining zones and national rail networks, substantially cutting logistics expenses and easing heavy road transportation pressure.

The new rail layout facilitates a fundamental shift in Macheng’s industrial development model. It empowers the local stone sector to move beyond simple resource export toward high-value development centred on service output and standard formulation, sharpening the core competitiveness of regional stone industries across domestic and international markets.
The project’s construction adhered strictly to national railway standards with rigorous whole-process quality control. Engineering teams resolved multiple technical challenges and completed full installation, commissioning, joint debugging and final acceptance of the railway’s four core electrical systems. The line connects with the existing Zhou Tiegang station on the Beijing-Kowloon Railway, requiring high-risk and high-precision docking of communication, signalling and power facilities with operational trunk lines.
Construction teams conducted comprehensive inspections of existing line equipment, cable layouts and system parameters, compiling targeted construction plans and emergency response protocols. Standardised approval procedures and real-time on-site monitoring were implemented throughout the entire construction phase. The whole docking process achieved zero disruption to the operation of the main national railway network, ensuring stable and seamless integration of new and existing systems.
Operated by Macheng Urban Development Stone Development Co., Ltd., the railway line builds an integrated logistics chain covering mining areas, industrial parks, national trunk railways and coastal ports. It creates an efficient land-and-sea transportation pattern that enables direct cargo delivery from mining sites and unobstructed access to global markets. The improved logistics network allows local stone products and industrial and agricultural goods to efficiently reach the Yangtze River Economic Belt, Yangtze River Delta, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and Pearl River Delta.
As a key collaborative initiative between local authorities and railway departments, the project delivers both industrial and public benefits. The large-capacity, low-emission advantages of rail transportation reduce overall energy consumption and pollutant emissions from freight activities. The upgraded logistics system will continue to underpin the sustainable and green development of Macheng’s signature stone industry in future operational cycles.
