China Overhauls Guochao Industry to Address Structural Flaws and Expand Global Influence
According to People’s Daily Overseas Edition, local governments nationwide are advancing integrated development of traditional culture and tangible manufacturing industries. Zhejiang promotes cross-border innovation for time-honored brands to build clustered domestic cultural and creative industrial parks. Shaanxi operates dedicated intangible cultural heritage workshops to realise commercial transformation of ancient craftsmanship. Guangdong’s manufacturing enterprises scale up original intellectual property research, shifting business focus from original equipment manufacturing to cross-border cultural exports. Trendy domestic products covering apparel, beauty cosmetics, tea beverages and designer toys have gained wide popularity among domestic consumers.
Current booming demand for Guochao, or China-chic products, reflects growing cultural confidence and comprehensive national strength. Survey data from the 2025 China Guochao Consumption Behaviour Report shows 85.79% of domestic consumers prefer home-grown trendy brands, with 48.69% choosing products mainly due to integrated Chinese aesthetic design elements. Modern Guochao development differs from early simple pattern copying, combining core technological breakthroughs with traditional aesthetic expression for in-depth industrial innovation. Official data from China General Administration of Customs shows cross-border shipments of Guochao cultural goods rose 12.4% year-on-year in 2025, marking steady overseas demand growth.

Structural drawbacks persist across the domestic Guochao market amid consumption expansion. Many enterprises adopt superficial cultural transformation, merely overlaying traditional patterns such as cloud motifs and dragon and phoenix graphics without cultural interpretation, triggering widespread product homogenisation. Some brands prioritise social media marketing while neglecting core craftsmanship and cultural connotation. Misaligned pricing mechanisms also exist in the sector, where brand premium fails to match product quality and cultural value. Most Guochao brands focus excessively on cutthroat domestic competition while lacking mature overseas expansion strategies, resulting in weak global market competitiveness.
Three-tier optimisation measures are being implemented to sustain long-term industrial growth. At the macro level, regulators will release unified national quality evaluation standards for Guochao consumer goods and curb counterfeit products that falsely label themselves as cultural heritage items. Authorities will fund integrated industrial bases and cultural clusters, linking traditional manufacturing zones with museums and art academies. Public service platforms will match consumer personalised demands with flexible intelligent manufacturing capacity. Supporting policies for cultural export will be rolled out, including overseas warehouse construction and international art events to spread Chinese aesthetic concepts.
At the meso industrial level, enterprises will increase capital input in underlying technological research covering functional textile materials, digital design algorithms and high-precision manufacturing. All brand premium will be anchored by tangible product quality. Systematic IP development frameworks will replace fragmented cultural element utilisation. Time-honored brands will adopt digital transformation and modern industrial procedures to renovate traditional handcrafts. Emerging Guochao brands will adjust operational strategies to reduce over-reliance on short-term online traffic flows.
At the micro social level, higher education institutions will launch interdisciplinary majors covering traditional Chinese aesthetics and commercial design to cultivate compound creative talents. National intellectual property protection enforcement will be strengthened to safeguard original cultural design achievements. Public cultural campaigns will guide consumers to recognise intrinsic craftsmanship value rather than superficial visual design. The public sector will foster a social atmosphere that respects independent creation and high-quality domestic manufacturing.
