China Eastern Runs Special Low-Carbon Themed Flight to Mark National Low Carbon Day 2026

Crew broadcast delivered opening remarks to all passengers, inviting travellers to embrace green development principles throughout every stage of their air journey. The airline rolled out a full suite of lightweight, recyclable eco-friendly measures spanning airport check-in processes, onboard amenities and in-flight passenger services.

Every element of onboard catering provision has been re-engineered to cut plastic waste and carbon footprints. Lightweight service trolleys, compact beverage bottles and slimmed serving trays replace conventional heavy alternatives, paired with fully biodegradable drinking straws and cutlery packaging materials to minimise single-use plastic consumption. Ground-side operations maintain long-running paperless travel frameworks, encouraging travellers to adopt electronic boarding passes, self-service check-in kiosks and automated baggage drop facilities to streamline low-carbon airport experiences.

A customer-focused dining initiative branded “Light Flight, Choose Meals As Required” forms a core part of the carrier’s sustainable service design. Passengers who opt out of pre-booked inflight meals receive redeemable membership reward points, embedding low-carbon habits into routine air travel arrangements. All participants selecting this programme on the themed flight received custom eco-friendly souvenir sets during the trip.

Once the aircraft reached steady cruising altitude, cabin crew delivered detailed announcements outlining the background of National Energy Conservation Week and National Low Carbon Day, sharing practical guidance on sustainable travel and issuing public calls to integrate carbon-conscious choices into daily routines. Interactive quiz sessions followed, with passengers discussing sustainable aviation fuel applications, onboard catering waste reduction and everyday eco-friendly behaviour. Shared discussion fostered wider public understanding of low-carbon operational standards within civil aviation.

The airline has systematically integrated eco-conscious design into every passenger touchpoint across its network in recent years. Fifty-three varieties of single-use onboard supplies have been replaced with biodegradable equivalents, covering over 90 per cent of all routine inflight service scenarios to cut waste emissions at source. The “Light Flight, Choose Meals As Required” dining scheme first launched in May 2024, and booking volumes have surpassed 9.7 million individual passenger reservations since introduction.
