China’s first key laboratory for high-value Antarctic krill utilisation opens in Liaoning
According to China Daily, China’s first national key laboratory dedicated to the high-value utilisation of Antarctic krill resources has officially settled at Liaoyu Group. On 27 July, Liaoyu Group hosted a comprehensive launching ceremony for the new laboratory, alongside the commissioning of the first-phase health food production base within its Antarctic Krill Biological Technology Park and the official groundbreaking of the second-phase high-quality Antarctic krill oil production base.
Antarctic krill represents a vital strategic polar marine biological resource with extensive application potential across functional food, biomedicine and cosmetic sectors in global markets. As a pioneering operator in China’s polar fishery industry, Liaoyu Group has specialised in Antarctic krill resource exploration and comprehensive development for 17 consecutive years. The enterprise has built a complete industrial development model driven by resource exploitation and technological innovation, supporting high-quality growth in China’s polar fishery sector.
The newly inaugurated laboratory will focus on whole-industry-chain high-value upgrading of Antarctic krill resources. It will carry out targeted technological research across multiple core technical fields, including stable preparation technologies for shipboard krill powder raw materials, upgrading and intelligent manufacturing of Antarctic krill oil, and the development of novel biological products and functional food formulas derived from krill resources.

Further research directions cover pharmaceutical value exploration and innovative development of marine traditional Chinese medicine based on Antarctic krill, translational medical research and clinical application verification of krill-derived products, as well as the establishment of unified industrial standards and systematic patent layout. The laboratory will develop an integrated innovation platform that incorporates fundamental research, technological breakthroughs, industrial transformation, professional talent cultivation, standard formulation and international academic cooperation.
The launch of the laboratory and the parallel progress of industrial park projects will further strengthen China’s technological advantages in polar marine resource development. Continuous technological iteration and industrial upgrading will unlock broader market prospects for deep-processed Antarctic krill products and support the sustainable development of China’s polar marine economy.
