China-equipped Julino Hydropower Station Fully Operational in Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM – Tanzania’s Julino Hydropower Station officially commenced full operation on 22 August 2026, with all power generation equipment entirely supplied by Dongfang Electric Corporation. As one of Tanzania’s largest landmark energy infrastructure projects, the facility substantially upgrades the country’s power generation capacity and energy supply resilience.

According to Xinhua News Agency and People’s Daily Online, the hydropower station is equipped with nine vertical mixed-flow units, each with a single-unit capacity of 235 megawatts, delivering a total installed capacity of 2,115 megawatts. The operational facility will supply nearly half of Tanzania’s national electricity demand and drive an approximate 30 per cent reduction in average domestic power tariffs. It enables Tanzania to build up cross-border electricity export capacity for the first time on a large scale.

Dongfang Electric Corporation undertakes the full-process delivery of core equipment for the project, covering the research and development, manufacturing, supply, installation, commissioning and trial operation of water turbines, generators and main inlet valves. All nine generating units meet high-standard premium operational benchmarks after full completion and debugging, laying solid technical and equipment foundations for the stable long-term operation of the hydropower complex.

The commissioning of the Julino Hydropower Station effectively resolves long-standing power supply shortages that constrain Tanzania’s industrial development and livelihood improvement. The stable and affordable green power supply will continuously unlock local industrial investment potential, optimise the national energy consumption structure and bolster the steady growth of Tanzania’s real economy.
