Flexible Manufacturing Drives Digital Transformation for Shandong Provincial‑owned Enterprises

Provincial‑owned enterprises across Shandong are pressing ahead with digital‑led transformation, deploying flexible manufacturing solutions across multiple manufacturing segments. Flexible manufacturing, a core component of smart manufacturing, is now operational at Weichai Power, Sinotruk, Inspur Smart Technology, Shinva Medical and Shandong Iron and Steel Group.

At its heart, flexible manufacturing enables single production lines to adapt swiftly to components of varying specifications, batch sizes and custom‑built requirements. This adaptive capability delivers tangible operational gains for Shandong’s provincial‑owned manufacturers, lifting production efficiency, shortening delivery lead‑times and sharpening responsiveness to market shifts.

Weichai Power handles an extensive catalogue of engine variants. Production‑line reconfiguration once required production halts, manual fixture replacement and manual adjustment of processing parameters. Machine‑vision‑powered intelligent recognition now supports fast, precise switching between disparate components. AI‑enabled agile manufacturing systems auto‑allocate order tasks across shop‑floor lines, with 100 per‑cent automated inspection for key working procedures. Mixed‑model components flow through production sequences, as assembly lines autonomously adjust process parameters. Flexible switching has become standard practice on Weichai’s intelligent production lines, pushing production efficiency up by 10.6 per cent.

Flexible capacity also reshapes heavy‑duty vehicle assembly. Sinotruk’s Laiwu factory hosts China’s first dedicated intelligent flexible general‑assembly line for heavy trucks. Diesel‑powered and new‑energy heavy‑duty vehicles roll off the same assembly infrastructure. Automated guided vehicle systems transport materials and work collaboratively with robotic stations, allowing rapid adaptation to diverse vehicle configurations. The line supports 75 different cab variants spanning three product platforms, covering multiple energy formats and customer‑specified set‑ups.

Flexible manufacturing brings distinct advantages to sectors characterised by small‑batch and highly customised orders, including intelligent end‑device production. Inspur Smart Technology adopts an AI‑driven hybrid production framework combining conventional assembly‑line workflows with cell‑based manufacturing. The setup retains high throughput for standard mass‑produced goods while enabling fast reconfiguration for custom‑specification outputs. It supports multi‑category, small‑volume manufacturing, fast turnaround and bespoke orders, accepting single‑unit custom requests. Assembly efficiency rises by 30 per cent, while lead‑times for custom‑made products shrink by nearly half. AI‑backed visual inspection runs throughout workflows, securing full‑coverage quality monitoring across production processes.

Medical‑device manufacturing demands precise responses to differentiated order requirements. Shinva Medical, under Shandong Health Group, operates an FMS flexible manufacturing line. Digital systems orchestrate intelligent equipment scheduling and agile production‑flow adjustments, supporting three‑shift unattended operations and automatic order scheduling. Overall equipment effectiveness holds steady at 90 per cent. Nine industrial robots carry out welding and polishing work for steriliser units, while two automated logistics systems handle inter‑station material transfers. A digital platform oversees production scheduling, equipment supervision and process‑parameter management. More than 90 per cent of production tasks are automated, with seven to eight finished units completed per single shift. Order delivery performance and output stability see marked improvements.

Flexible production techniques extend to steel‑making workflows. At Shandong Iron and Steel Group Rizhao Company’s 4300‑mill production line, AI‑powered machine vision empowers automatic slab turning on roughing mills, cutting manual‑labour intensity by over 80 per cent. Digital design tools and flexible production systems allow the mill to process steel orders with diverse performance and application requirements. Cruise‑ship grade steel, Arctic‑region pipeline steel and premium automotive steel sheets can all be manufactured on the same facility with enhanced operational agility.

Deployed across engine manufacturing, heavy‑vehicle assembly, intelligent hardware, medical‑equipment fabrication and steel‑sheet production, flexible manufacturing installations operated by Shandong provincial‑owned enterprises deliver measurable improvements in output efficiency, order‑fulfilment cycles and automation levels.
