Bohai Oilfield Sets New Buried‑hill Drilling Record with High‑yield Condensate Well

On 1 September, operational updates emerged from the Bohai Oilfield. A well within the Bozhong 19‑6 condensate gas field has delivered exceptional flow rates, producing more than 210 000 cubic metres of natural gas and nearly 400 cubic metres of crude oil per day. Actual output exceeds its designed production targets. The completed well reaches over 6 300 metres, establishing a new depth record for buried‑hill drilling across the Bohai Oilfield.

This ultra‑deep development well requires approximately 700 connected drill pipes to reach its final total depth. Downhole operating conditions are extremely demanding; drilling torque rises by roughly 40 per cent compared with conventional operations and approaches the mechanical limits of drilling assemblies. High‑temperature, high‑pressure and complex stratigraphic conditions narrow the viable operational window for field crews. Drill bits travelling through rock strata several kilometres beneath the seabed face constant risk of deviation. Continuous real‑time formation assessment and targeted operational adjustments are essential to hit the target reservoir zones accurately.

During drilling activities, project teams under Tianjin‑based operations have iterated and upgraded buried‑hill drilling techniques and refined operational workflows. A complete technical and management framework covers pre‑drill risk forecasting, in‑drilling dynamic response and contingency handling for complex downhole events. Big‑data‑powered real‑time monitoring identifies high‑risk subsurface boundaries in advance, enabling pre‑emptive mitigation measures. Dynamic adjustments to drilling‑fluid properties, fine‑tuned drilling parameters, deployment of drag‑reduction tools and enhanced hole‑cleaning protocols safeguard downhole tool integrity and facilitate stable penetration towards target reservoir horizons.

Engineering‑geology integrated collaboration underpins safe operations and preserves production capacity for the well. Core technical systems for lost‑circulation prevention, reservoir protection and drilling‑efficiency improvement undergo ongoing optimisation. Revised completion designs introduce temporary well sealing during completion phases. This measure maximises reservoir preservation and unlocks full hydrocarbon deliverability from the formation.

Field‑proven technical insights gained from this ultra‑deep well will feed into subsequent buried‑hill development programmes across the Bohai area. Further ultra‑deep drilling campaigns will draw on the accumulated operational experience to tackle similarly harsh subsurface environments and unlock additional offshore hydrocarbon resources.
