Main‑works Commence for Lingbao Pumped‑storage Project in Henan, Expanding China’s Energy‑storage Capacity
According to China Energy News, the main‑phase construction of the Lingbao pumped‑storage power station invested and developed by China Huadian formally broke ground on 30 August, marking the project’s entry into full‑scale implementation.
Situated in Zhuyang Town, Lingbao city within Sanmenxia, Henan Province, the facility is planned to deploy four 300 MW single‑stage vertical‑shaft mixed‑flow reversible generating units, delivering a total installed capacity of 1 200 MW. Units can sustain continuous full‑load generation for six hours, with projected annual power output reaching 1.589 billion kilowatt‑hours. Once commissioned, the station will deliver peak‑shaving, valley‑filling, energy‑storage, frequency‑regulation, phase‑modulation and emergency back‑up services for western Henan’s power grid, and support local clean‑low‑carbon energy transition.
China Huadian has secured steady progress across multiple key pumped‑storage schemes throughout the current year, completing investment approvals and launching main‑works construction in sequence. The 1 200 MW Xixingchong pumped‑storage project in Anhui saw its main‑phase start‑up in March 2026, designed to match fast‑expanding computing‑power‑driven electricity‑regulation requirements in Wuhu. The 1 200 MW Yongchang pumped‑storage facility in Gansu began main‑works construction in June 2026; upon completion it will substantially improve wind and solar power absorption capacity within the Hexi Corridor new‑energy base.

Two further pumped‑storage developments, the 1 400 MW Niushoushan‑East scheme in Ningxia and the 1 800 MW Jingyu project in Jilin, are scheduled for construction kick‑off within the calendar year. When operational, both assets will facilitate effective integration and large‑scale outward transmission of local renewable‑energy resources.
Civil‑engineering and equipment‑procurement workflows will advance for each site. The expanding national pumped‑storage portfolio delivers flexible balancing resources for provincial grids grappling with rising shares of variable wind and solar generation.
