Track-laying Completed Across Chongqing–Kunming High-speed Railway; Yuntou Railway Invests 25.847 Billion Yuan

According to the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of Yunnan Province, published on 29 October 2026, full track-laying work on the Chongqing–Kunming high-speed railway was finished on 24 October, when the final pair of 500-metre rails was laid at the entrance of Junlian Tunnel.

Yuntou Railway, a subsidiary of Yunnan Investment Holding Group and the sole provincial investment representative for railway projects in Yunnan, has widened financing channels and injected a total of 25.847 billion yuan into the scheme. The sum marks the highest level of investment commitment for any railway project undertaken within the province.

The line forms a key segment of the Beijing–Kunming corridor in China’s eight-vertical and eight-horizontal high-speed rail network. It runs from Chongqing West Station via Chongqing municipality, Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan provinces to Kunming South Station, stretching roughly 700 kilometres with a design speed of 350 kilometres per hour. Construction proceeds in phases, and the section between Chongqing and Yibin entered service on 29 September 2024, while works on the Yibin to Kunming stretch continue.

With track-laying complete, all subgrade works and finishing for new station buildings have been finalised. Site clearance and municipal supporting works are being accelerated. Static acceptance and integrated commissioning and testing will follow in sequence, and the line is expected to be ready for operation in the first half of 2027.

Once open, the journey between Chongqing and Kunming will take approximately two and a half hours, and the fastest service from Chengdu to Kunming will be cut to under three hours. The route will shorten travel distances across inland south-western China, establish a rapid transport link between the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle and the central Yunnan urban cluster, and support the efficient movement of passengers and goods across the region.
