CAS Unveils RISC-V Core Achievements, Strengthening China’s Voice in Global Open-Source Standards

On March 26, at the RISC-V Ecosystem Technology Forum during the 2026 Zhongguancun Forum Annual Meeting, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) officially released two key achievements in RISC-V ecosystem construction — the "Xiangshan" open-source high-performance RISC-V processor system and the "Ruyi" RISC-V native operating system. Simultaneously, the joint R&D of the next-generation chip and operating system was launched.

The release of "Xiangshan" and "Ruyi" marks the formation of two major RISC-V open-source root communities led by China, enabling the country to gain more say in the formulation of global open-source technology standards.

As a globally free and open chip underlying architecture, RISC-V requires no patent fees and can be independently modified, serving as an important technological route for China to break through the chip ecosystem and develop independently controllable computing power.

The newly released "Xiangshan" open-source high-performance RISC-V processor has reached an internationally advanced level. Its "Kunming Lake" processor core achieved a measured SPEC CPU2006 score of 16.5 points/GHz, making it the world’s most powerful and active open-source RISC-V processor core to date. Currently, "Xiangshan" has achieved full coverage from data centers and intelligent computing to terminal scenarios, becoming the world’s only open-source high-performance RISC-V processor system.

The "Ruyi" RISC-V native operating system, designed to closely align with the new standards and features of the RISC-V architecture from the outset, has taken the lead in building a unified verification platform for RISC-V standards and features. It has also achieved native operating system support for the RVA23 high-performance international standard for the first time, laying a solid "software foundation" for the collaborative innovation of RISC-V hardware and software.

In terms of industrial implementation, high-performance open-source chips have achieved large-scale application. XinDong Technology, JinDie Space-Time, LanXin Computing Power and other enterprises have successfully launched commercial chips based on the "Xiangshan" processor, realizing the world’s first product-level delivery and large-scale application of high-performance open-source chips.

Under the guidance of various national ministries and commissions, CAS has joined hands with all sectors to build a full-chain RISC-V development system covering technological innovation, industrial implementation and ecological cultivation. It has successfully paved the way for the industrialization of open-source chips, providing a "Chinese solution" for China’s information technology industry to break free from traditional path constraints and build a self-evolving processor ecosystem.
