China’s 3D printing industry accelerates large-scale application amid booming exports and tech innovation

Driven by continuous breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, new materials and intelligent manufacturing technologies, China’s 3D printing sector is unlocking new industrial development momentum and speeding up transformation from technical verification to large-scale commercial application.

According to the latest General Administration of Customs data, China exported 2.46 million 3D printers in the first four months of 2026, with a total export value reaching 6.106 billion yuan. The year-on-year growth rates of export volume and value hit 100.3 percent and 110.4 percent respectively. Domestic output of 3D printing equipment rose 50.9 percent year on year over the same period, ranking among the fastest-growing segments within China’s advanced manufacturing industry.

Robust domestic production and explosive overseas sales reflect comprehensive industrial upgrading. Industrial players across the 3D printing supply chain are accelerating strategic layout and technological iteration to seize global market opportunities. Strategic cooperation and technological innovation have become core drivers for industrial expansion and product optimisation.

Leading domestic enterprises are deepening cross-field technological integration to build competitive advantages in intelligent 3D manufacturing. Creality secured its listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on May 29, becoming the first consumer-grade 3D printing enterprise listed in Hong Kong. Its prospectus shows the company achieved an annual revenue of 3.127 billion yuan in 2025, representing a year-on-year increase of 36.65 percent. The enterprise maintains steady revenue growth while expanding technological research and industrial layout.

The industrial layout of 3D visual sensing technologies marks an in-depth extension of upstream technological capabilities to digital manufacturing sectors. Ongoing research and development focus covers intelligent model reconstruction, printing quality optimisation, operational stability improvement and smart production upgrading. China’s industrial-grade 3D printing market maintains strong expansion momentum. Growing orders for customised 3D printing equipment and products have driven continuous business scale expansion across industrial manufacturers. Xi’an Bright Laser Technologies recorded operating revenue of 326 million yuan in the first quarter of 2026, with a year-on-year growth of 43.57 percent.

Automotive manufacturing has emerged as a key application scenario for advanced additive manufacturing technology. According to industry enterprise updates, 3D printing is widely applied in automotive research, development and small-batch trial production processes. The technology effectively reduces repeated industrial tests and mould development cycles, improves product design flexibility, and supports the development of high-performance automotive components and personalised customised products. Industrial enterprises have established stable cooperative ties with multiple domestic and overseas automotive clients to expand industrial landing scenarios.

According to research from China Merchants Securities, downstream industrial applications of 3D printing have formed diversified and mature market structures. Industrial machinery accounts for 20 percent of overall application volume, aerospace occupies 17 percent, automotive manufacturing takes 14 percent, and consumer electronics makes up 13 percent.

Application boundaries of 3D printing technology keep expanding in high-end manufacturing fields. In the aerospace sector, industrial practices are shifting from lightweight structural component manufacturing to core part production, including engine combustion chambers and turbine blades. In consumer electronics, titanium alloy 3D printing technology has achieved large-scale commercial adoption for hinge components of foldable smartphones, with mainstream consumer electronics brands applying the technology to optimise product structure and performance.

Global consumer-grade 3D printing markets maintain rapid expansion, with growing equipment shipments, overseas market demand and application scenarios. The integrated development of 3D scanning, three-dimensional modelling and intelligent printing powered by artificial intelligence technologies will further release industrial potential in consumer creation, industrial intelligent manufacturing, education and training, medical rehabilitation and personalised customisation sectors.

Continuous declines in equipment costs, improvements in printing efficiency and optimisation of industrial supporting systems will further promote the popularisation of 3D printing technologies.
