Tianjin’s Wudadao Crabapple Festival Blooms, Blending History and Spring Charm
In the bright month of April, the Malus micromalus flowers in Tianjin’s Wudadao are in full bloom, with dense clusters of pink-and-white blossoms adorning the branches to form a stunning floral sea. As the spring breeze blows gently, a faint fragrance lingers in the air, while century-old historic buildings nestle quietly among the flowers, their elegant walls and smooth architectural lines combining with the delicate blossoms to create a vivid "spring oil painting".
According to People’s Network, the 4th Wudadao Crabapple Festival has recently kicked off, featuring 6 thematic sections, 123 performances and 26 themed exhibitions that add more charm to the beautiful spring scenery and attract numerous tourists to explore the seasonal beauty. During the Qingming Holiday, Dali Road in Wudadao was crowded with visitors, who wandered through the layers of crabapple blossoms and took photos to capture the city’s spring glamour.
Known as an "exhibition of international architecture", Wudadao boasts more than 300 historic buildings and former residences of celebrities, with Western-style buildings of various styles scattered across the area. Among them, Tang Courtyard, a traditional Chinese-style courtyard, stands out prominently. With crabapple blossoms in full bloom in front of it, many tourists gather in the courtyard to enjoy tea around the stove, embracing a leisurely and comfortable moment.

"When the crabapple blossoms bloom, Tang Courtyard enters the busiest and most lively time of the year," said Hua Mengxu, Product Director of Qianju Brand at Tang Courtyard. She introduced that Tang Courtyard, formerly known as Cai Family Ancestral Hall built in 1935, is the only traditional Chinese-style historic building in Wudadao. After a rescue renovation following the principle of "restoring old buildings to their original appearance", the once dilapidated old building has been transformed into a comprehensive cultural and tourism space integrating culture, leisure and experience.
In the former residence of Li Jifu, built in 1918, crabapple blossoms at the corner interweave with new greenery, presenting a vibrant spring scene. Yin Tao, relevant person in charge of the operator of Li Jifu’s former residence, stated that the residence takes a coffee social art space as its core, integrating art galleries, coffee, tea, wine, catering and cultural and creative industries. This allows tourists to enjoy the ancient architecture and flowers while savoring the taste of spring.
As night falls, the flower shadows sway gently, and the soft lights endow the crabapple blossoms with a touch of haziness and romance. During the festival, a special "Light Up the Crabapples" ceremony is held every night at Minyuan Square, while a themed building light show is staged on the buildings along both sides of the Haihe River. The shadows of crabapple blossoms spread all over the banks, and themed cruise ships shuttle on the river, with light and water reflecting each other beautifully.
"The entire area is a stage, and everyone can be part of the picture," Peng Peng, Director of the Culture and Tourism Bureau of Heping District, Tianjin, described the city in full bloom. "Among the 123 performances of this year’s festival, 70 are interactive. We have decorated streets, street corners, balconies and parks, and even hidden ‘surprises’ on road bricks, walls, tree holes and power boxes," he added.
Li Kang, Director of the Publicity Department of Heping District, Tianjin, noted that the spring crabapple festival is the prelude to Tianjin’s cultural and tourism boom. "We can enjoy crabapple blossoms with foreign-style buildings in spring, the romance by the river in summer, golden trees and warm sun in autumn, and European-style snow scenes in winter. Cultural, tourism and commercial activities are held throughout the year, making each season unique," he said. According to Xinhua News Agency, Wudadao, once part of the British concession, has become one of Tianjin’s most important cultural landmarks, attracting tourists from home and abroad.
