Nanjing Railway Station Prepares for Surge in May Day Holiday Passenger Flow
Information from Nanjing Railway Station shows that the 2026 May Day holiday transportation period will last for 8 days, from April 29 to May 6. The station is expected to send 3.05 million passengers, with a daily average of 381,300, an increase of 7.7% compared with the same period in 2025, reflecting a strong willingness of people to travel during the holiday.
China Railway News Network reported that Nanjing, as a popular tourist city, remains one of the most favored destinations for tourists during the May Day holiday this year. The passenger flow of Nanjing Railway Station during the holiday is mainly composed of students, relatives visiting friends and tourists going out. In addition, exhibitions, Jiangsu Super League matches and performances held around Nanjing have continued to drive the growth of passenger flow.
The passenger flow is mainly concentrated in short and medium-distance directions within the jurisdiction, such as Northern Jiangsu, Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo, Anhui and Hubei, as well as inter-provincial directions including Beijing, Xi’an, Fuzhou and Xiamen. Due to the long holiday, the passenger travel willingness is generally high, and the passenger flow will remain at a high level for 5 days during the holiday. The peak passenger flow is expected to appear on May 2, with 410,000 passengers to be sent that day.

To fully meet the travel needs of passengers during the May Day holiday, Nanjing Railway Station will take a series of measures to expand transportation capacity. From April 29 to May 6, on the basis of the peak operation plan, the station plans to add 126.5 pairs of temporary trains, including 95 pairs at Nanjing South Station and 31.5 pairs at Nanjing Station.
Among them, 52 originating temporary trains will be added from Nanjing to Shanghai, Hangzhou, Xuzhou, Lianyungang, Jinzhai, Fuyang, Anqing, Nantong, Yancheng, Nanchang, Ganyu and other places. The station will also dynamically monitor the passenger flow situation and flexibly expand transportation capacity by adding temporary passenger trains, attaching additional carriages and reconnection of EMU trains.
In addition, to facilitate passengers’ night travel, Nanjing Station Intercity Yard and Nanjing South Station will add night high-speed trains from late night to early morning on April 29, 30, May 1, 4 and 5, making every effort to ensure that passengers can travel smoothly. China Railway News Network noted that these measures fully reflect the people-oriented service concept of Nanjing Railway Station.
The comprehensive arrangement of transportation capacity not only effectively responds to the surging passenger flow during the May Day holiday but also provides a safe, convenient and efficient travel guarantee for passengers. It also highlights the strong recovery momentum of China’s tourism and transportation industries, demonstrating the vitality of people’s travel and consumption.
