Guangdong Unveils Dragon Boat & Summer Festival Campaign to Boost Cultural Tourism

Guangdong has extended a warm invitation to visitors nationwide and worldwide, inviting them to savour traditional customs and embrace vibrant summer experiences across the region. The call was made at a press conference held on June 2, 2026, to promote tourism and consumption during the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival and summer holidays.

This year’s Dragon Boat Festival falls immediately before the summer break, creating a key window for promoting traditional culture, intangible heritage, and tourism spending. Official data shows that during the 2025 Dragon Boat holiday, Guangdong received 23.21 million visitors, representing a year-on-year increase of 20.6%, while tourism revenue reached 11.44 billion yuan, up 25.6%. Iconic events including dragon boat banquets in Guangzhou’s Liede Village and the competitive races in Chebei, as well as the “drifting” dragon boat contests in Diejiao, Foshan, have become nationally recognised cultural highlights.

Cultural Heritage Takes Centre Stage

Guangdong is widely regarded as the home of dragon boat culture in China. The province will host over 200 dragon boat events and more than 500 competitions across cities, alongside cultural markets, heritage exhibitions, folk experiences, and gourmet tastings. Visitors can enjoy races, taste traditional rice dumplings, explore ancient streets, and experience Lingnan customs first-hand.

Consumption Incentives to Boost Visitor Spending

Provincial-level tourism consumption vouchers will be released in phases to reduce travel costs. Major online travel platforms including Ctrip, Meituan and Tongcheng will launch promotional campaigns, forming a “government subsidy + platform discount + merchant offer” model. Eight additional provincial policies will further support inbound tourism and spending, improving services for international visitors.

Summer Tourism Highlights Coastal and Study Tours

With the summer holiday approaching, Guangdong will launch the “Summer in Guangdong” campaign, focusing on coastal getaways and educational tours. Visitors can enjoy beaches, seafood, and marine activities, while themed study routes cover history, heritage, technology, and Bay Area culture.

Sports Events Drive Participation and Engagement

The summer calendar features a full lineup of sporting events. Traditional dragon boat races will incorporate drones, robotics, AI and marine technology elements. Land-based dragon boat activities and tug-of-war competitions will enable wider community participation. The Guangdong Super League will stage 51 regular-season matches, while the Guangdong Basketball Association playoffs and finals will attract large audiences, converting event attendance into local consumption.

As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches and summer unfolds, Guangdong continues to integrate culture, tourism, commerce and sport to strengthen cultural heritage and stimulate domestic demand. The initiatives will support the high-quality development of the regional tourism industry.
