Over 170 Milu Deer Gather at South Dongting Lake, Forming One of the Largest Herds in Recent Years
According to Xinhua News Agency, on 4 June, a herd of Milu deer was spotted inhabiting the Huanghuatan area of Luhu, Yuanjiang, within the Hunan South Dongting Lake Provincial Nature Reserve, as captured by drone photography.

As water levels in Dongting Lake rise, Milu deer—China’s national first-class protected wildlife—have gradually migrated from low-lying areas to higher lake shoals. In recent days, more than 170 Milu deer have congregated in the Huanghuatan area, forming one of the largest herds recorded in the region in recent years.
The site has become a key habitat for the species as seasonal water shifts drive natural migration patterns. The gathering reflects improved ecological conditions and effective conservation management across the reserve. The area will continue to support Milu deer population expansion and natural behaviour in the coming seasons.
