Watermelon Harvest Blooms in Southern Guangxi
Nanning, Guangxi – Farmers in Huakang Village, Pumiao Town, Yongning District, carry freshly picked watermelons amid a bumper early-summer harvest, with fields bustling as crews pick, sort and load fruit for market.
In the fields of Huakang Village, lush vines heavy with ripe watermelons stretch across the landscape. Farmers move between rows, harvesting the fruit while others transport it to collection points for sorting and loading. The bright, sunny days and well-drained soil of the region create ideal growing conditions, delivering crisp, sweet watermelons favoured by buyers.
Pumiao Town has a long-standing reputation as a key watermelon-growing area in Nanning. Huakang Village’s orchards, managed with improved farming techniques, produce high-quality fruit with sugar levels reaching 13%, appealing to both local consumers and regional markets. Popular varieties include Honeycrisp, Black Beauty and Kirin, chosen for their flavour, texture and disease resistance.

This year’s harvest builds on the village’s progress in developing its agricultural economy. Once designated a poverty alleviation area, Huakang achieved poverty removal in 2016 and has since expanded commercial crops, including watermelon, chilli and seedlings, alongside small-scale livestock farming. Watermelon cultivation spans more than 1,000 mu, with annual output exceeding 3 million kilogrammes and a total value of over 6.8 million yuan.
To strengthen the sector, local authorities promote improved seeds, greenhouse nursery techniques and pest management programmes. Demonstration bases and technical training help farmers adopt standardised practices, raising productivity and fruit quality. Supply chains have also developed, with buyers from across southern China coming to Huakang during the harvest period.
Beyond fieldwork, the village hosts events such as watermelon fairs and contests to promote its produce. These gatherings feature variety displays, weight competitions and cultural performances, attracting visitors and enhancing the brand of Huakang watermelon.
As the harvest continues, Huakang Village focuses on stable production, reliable quality and expanded sales channels. The watermelon sector remains central to rural revitalisation, raising incomes and supporting sustainable agricultural development across Yongning District.
