China’s E-commerce Boosts Industrial Upgrade and Consumption Growth in 2026

According to the Ministry of Commerce, China’s e-commerce sector has maintained robust growth throughout the first four months of 2026. Digital and intelligent transformation continues to empower industrial upgrading, while diversified online consumption scenarios stimulate market vitality and globalised business expansion further consolidates the real economy foundation.

E-commerce has delivered prominent results in driving industrial digital upgrading across agricultural, manufacturing and service industries. Official big data monitoring shows online retail sales of agricultural products rose 12.2 percent year on year in the January-April period, expanding market circulation channels for rural specialty goods and modernising traditional agricultural sales models. Industrial e-commerce transactions have achieved remarkable growth in bulk commodity sectors, with monitored metal products trading surging 34.8 percent and chemical products trading climbing 12.2 percent, facilitating streamlined transactions and refined operational management for industrial manufacturers.

Strong online drainage capabilities effectively fuel the recovery of offline service industries. Driven by digital marketing and online reservation mechanisms, the tourism and catering sectors have registered rapid business expansion. Online sales revenue of tourism services increased 33.2 percent year on year, while catering online sales grew 20 percent, demonstrating the powerful integrating effect of digital platforms on consumer service industries.

Digital consumption has become a core engine for high-quality domestic consumption expansion. The eighth China Online Shopping Festival has enriched high-end consumption scenarios under the national “Shop in China” initiative, unlocking diversified market potential and guiding consumption upgrading. National statistical data indicate China’s online retail sales of goods and services increased 6.6 percent year on year in the first four months. Online commodity retail sales contribute 72.2 percent of the total growth in social consumer goods retail sales, serving as the primary driving force for domestic consumption recovery.
