Gardenia Blooms Drive Rural Revitalisation in Zhongxiang, Hubei
Zhongxiang, Hubei – In the height of summer, the gardenia plantations of Dahong Village, Changtan Town, are in full bloom. Villagers gather to harvest the fragrant white blossoms, which are transported to processing facilities immediately after picking. Every part of the gardenia plant holds commercial value, with one mu yielding a net income of over 3,000 yuan last year.
Gardenia, including its flowers and fruit, thrives in marginal soils and varied terrain, making it ideal for utilising idle rural land. In recent years, Zhongxiang has promoted large‑scale gardenia cultivation tailored to local conditions. Changtan Town alone hosts more than 3,000 mu of gardenia crops, with Dahong Village, the core production area, accounting for 1,500 mu.
Village‑level leadership initiated the first 30 mu of gardenia plantations in 2024. By 2025, the base delivered stable returns, prompting widespread participation from local residents. The village provides free technical training, unified seedling procurement and sales channel development. Many villagers also grow gardenia in small plots around their homes, turning every patch of available land into a source of income.

To address unstable sales, limited industrial chains and low added value from scattered farming, Changtan Town has attracted processing enterprises through targeted investment. A cooperative model combining self‑built bases, farmer outreach and guaranteed purchase prices has been adopted. The enterprise operates 1,000 mu of standardised plantations and supports a further 500 mu of adjacent farmland, with a minimum price guarantee for fresh flowers. Since the project’s launch, it has lifted 100 households into stable prosperity, adding over 20,000 yuan to the average annual household income.
The plant’s first‑phase facility concentrates on scented tea production, with an annual output of 800 tonnes. A second phase will add another scented tea line and a hydrosol production unit, according to the local agricultural technology firm. The company has secured supply contracts with major new‑style tea brands headquartered in Wuhan, Changsha and Nanjing, representing a contracted output value of approximately 150 million yuan. Upon full completion, the project is expected to create 220 jobs and involve 5,000 local residents in cultivation.
In April this year, a local entrepreneur returned to Zhongxiang to establish a specialised cooperative focusing on the standardized cultivation, production and processing of high‑quality gardenia fruit. The cooperative has planted over 2,000 mu of gardenia, with an additional 500 mu developed by surrounding farmers. Gardenia fruit matures in three years and reaches full production in five, while a supporting drying plant is already under construction.
Changtan Town will develop themed sightseeing gardens centred on gardenia and bayberry, attracting visitors for fruit picking, flower viewing and rural experiences. The integration of agriculture, culture and tourism will generate new growth drivers and further increase rural incomes.
